Arnie’s Bakery was founded in 1905 by the Sonneveldt brothers, John, Chris and Arnold as Crescent Bakery (pictured on front cover) on Grand Rapids west side. Arnold continued in the business as Sonneveldt Bakery and in 1922, he moved to our current location on Leonard Street. About 1930, Arnold changed the name from Sonneveldt Bakery to Buttercup Bakery. Arnold’s sons, Robert and Arnold Jr. took over the bakery from their father and continued in the business for many years. Buttercup Bakery with retail locations around the Grand Rapids area became a well known bakery for it’s high quality authentic Danish pastries, Artisan breads and one of a kind cakes.

Arne Fahlen, whose family owned a bakery restaurant in Sweden, was trained by his father in the bakery business. Arne went on to attend Pastry Chef school in Switzerland. In 1952, he came to the U.S. was professionally trained in the bakery business and was research director for one of the largest multi-retail bakery in the U.S. Arne had a strong passion for the bakery business and he always wanted to have his own bakery. In 1969 he met Arnold Sonneveldt. Arne became partners with Arnold at Buttercup Bakery. In 1972, Arne started our first bakery restaurant known as the Old Mill in Rockford, which still operates today. In 1978, Arne started the first “Arnie’s Bakery Restaurant” concept. Given the history of the owners, Arnie’s was a perfect name and the name of the outstanding bakery products were changed to Arnie’s Bakery Classics.

Arne’s four sons, Richard Arne, Steven Arne, James Arne, and Erik Arne, all grew up working, studying and learning all facets of the business. While Steve followed his desire to practice in medicine, Rich, Jim, and Erik own and operate the company along with their father. In 1992 they bought out the Sonneveldt family interest in the company. Today we have four bakery restaurants with plans to expand. We have over 75 retail bakery locations in grocery stores across West Michigan, and we sell frozen baked goods to food service distributors across the Midwest.

Arnie’s would like to thank you for all your business and your loyal following as we celebrate over 100 years in business. We plan to keep growing our business with our outstanding high quality products and stay “fresher than ever.”
